Introduction To Playing Poker

When one plays poker, his single objective is to gamble. The betting element in this game is so much observed that if not money appears on the table, color-coded chips are employed as counters. White ones are the lowest valued; red is equivalent to five whites; and blue ten whites. Sometimes yellows are also used and at a higher value. The presence of the bet as an indispensable part of the game warrants a subtle explanation.

Unlike other games of skill, a large portion of strategies and tactics are assigned to bluffing and daring the opponent into forfeiting the game and the current stakes even without truly knowing the combination in his hand, and the bet is very much a part of this probably more than the card a player holds in his hand. One way to communicate a bluff is to offer to raise the stake by throwing in an additional amount upon the collective pile of money or chips at the center of the table, in full view of the opponents. This is a ploy that aims to wheedle an abdication without first revealing the actual hand.

Each player in turn is given the opportunity to either bet on his cards or drop out of the game. Expert poker players have acquired years of experience in estimating the opponents' hands by noting details in habits and mannerisms. Their methods of deception are almost flawless in masking and misleading the strength and weakness of their own combinations.

The other portion of poker skill is being keen in crafting the best combination. The highest is called the Royal Flush made up of an ace, a king, a queen, a jack, and a 10 of the same suit. The second is a Straight Flush - five cards of the same suit in a sequence. Third is Four Of A Kind. Fourth, a Full House - three of a kind accompanied by a pair of another kind (e.g. three kings and two 5's). Fifth, a Flush - any five cards of the same suit but not in sequence. Sixth, a Straight - a sort of a Flush in that it is made of any five cards in sequence but not of the same suit. Here, the ace may be above the king or below the deuce (a card with the numeric value of two). Seventh is Three Of A Kind. Eighth, Two Pairs. Ninth, One Pair. Tenth, the High Card, in which the highest value wins.

The importance of the card's numeric value is never lost in determining a confrontation of hands of the same combination. The winner of two opposite hands of full houses is the one with the highest three of a kind. When combinations are tied, the one with the highest unmatched card wins.
